Bangor firefighter injured at Center Street fire

BANGOR, Maine — Bangor Fire Department crews were busy late Friday and early Saturday when they were called to two fires, one that resulted in an injured firefighter.

“He was struck by a board that fell from the roof,” Assistant Chief Scott Bostock said Saturday morning.

The unnamed firefighter was battling a multi-unit fire at 389 Center St. reported just after 6 a.m. by a newspaper delivery person.

“He actually beat on the doors to let them know [there was danger] and everybody got out fine,” Assistant Chief Vance Tripp said Sunday morning.

Three people were in the burning building and made it out unharmed, thanks to the man’s efforts, he said.

The injured firefighter was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center by a Bangor fire ambulance.

“He’s fine,” Tripp said. “There is no broken bones. It put quite a lump on his arm and it will be sore for a few days but he’ll be back to work shortly.”

The person who called in the Center Street fire reported smoke and flames.

“When [firefighters] got there they had an actual fire in the attic,” Bostock said.

The fire damaged much of the second floor and attic.

The earlier fire was reported at 10 p.m. Friday as smoke and fire was reported in the basement at 188 West Broadway, located on the corner of West Broadway and Savage Street.

“It was occupied and everyone was out when we got there,” Bostock said.

Lightning is being blamed for the Center Street fire, Tripp said Sunday, adding the cause of the West Broadway basement fire is still under investigation.
