BANGOR, Maine — Members of the Bangor Fire Department and the staff at City Hall are among those mourning the loss last week of the city’s fire safety inspector.

Robert Buss, 59, died unexpectedly Thursday at his home in Hancock, according to his obituary. He had been working for the city since June 2011.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday and Calvary Baptist Church at 61 State St. in Brewer.

According to a notice posted on the Professional Fire Fighters of Maine’s website, Bangor Fire Department Chaplain William Leighton will preside over the service. Also taking part are members of the department’s Honor Guard.

Before he and Carolyn Ericksen-Buss, his wife of 20 years, moved to Maine, Buss was a building inspector and plan-checker in California for 26 years. After he retired, he and his wife moved to their dream cottage in Hancock in 2006.

An expert in building codes, Buss worked out of Bangor’s Code Enforcement Office. He was on the job right up until the time of his death.

“He was quite a guy,” Code Enforcement Office Jeremy Martin said Monday of Buss. “He was very thorough — he was a code person. That’s what he did.”

“And he was liked by everyone here,” Martin added. “He was very thoughtful and caring. He had a great sense of humor. His death was very unexpected. He will be missed.”

Buss was an avid photographer and writer and had a knack for home improvement projects, including those that involved tiling, woodworking, electricity and plumbing, his obituary said.

In addition to his wife, Buss leaves his mother, two daughters and a son-in-law, two sons, two stepchildren, two grandchildren and a sister, among others.
